Coffee House Franchise Opportunities In The USA & Canada (Part 1)

Coffee House Franchise Opportunities In The USA & Canada (Part 1)

If you are a coffee enthusiast like me, chances are the idea of acquiring and running a coffee house franchise has passed through your mind. It is striving evergreen business in the USA and Canada, with mind-blowing numbers.

In my opinion, the best way to go and build your coffee shop business is by looking for the best coffee house franchise opportunities available in North America.

Coffee house franchise opportunities in the US

As the famous Gregory Bateson said: ” Numbers are the product of counting. Quantities are the product of measurement. This means that numbers can conceivably be accurate because there is a discontinuity between each integer and the next.”

So Let’s dig deeper into the statistics before touching on the franchise opportunities available at the moment, the numbers are provided by The National Coffee Association and The Specialty Coffee Association of America.

  • At the moment, there are more than 24,000 coffee shops in the United States alone, with predictions of that number going above 50,000 within the coming few years.
  • Espresso drive-thru businesses are averaging 300 to 400 espresso and coffee-based drinks per day.
  • A market of over 150,000,000 daily coffee consumers, which relates to more than 50% of the American population over the age of 18.
  • With an average of 3 cups per day, that would translate to a large 450,000,000 cups of coffee SOLD DAILY.
  • The United States imports $4 Billion worth of coffee yearly.

Coffee Shop Franchise VS Independent Business

    1. The Business Model: As a franchise owner, you agree with the franchiser to promote their product, use the business name and follow the franchiser processes in exchange for a one time fee or a percentage on sale or both.
    2. Coffee Shop Franchise: In this case, the franchisee has no control over product lineup, branding, and decision-making. While this might be considered as a downside for some of you, I think that this model is perfect for a start-up as the products are always tested and most proven to sell since the franchiser has a history and data to prove it.
    3. Independent Business: here, you should keep in mind that while you have the freedom to decide on every small detail of your coffee shop business, you will lack the support of an experienced franchiser who already have been in the trenches.
    4. Costs Involved: As an independent business owner, you are likely to face a higher initial investment. Surely, you will have all the decisions to make in every aspect of your business. On the other side, buying a franchise have a lower investment cost, but you will have to abide by the terms and obligations defined by your franchisers and, of course, pay royalties as per your final agreement.
    5. The Brand: One of the most important advantages of being a franchise owner is brand recognition if the brand is well-established with a growing clientele and a crystal clear reputation I would advise you to choose this path.
    6. The Know-How: If this is your first business endeavor, buying a franchise can have many advantages for you. You will have access to a proven business system, company support, ongoing training, supplier discounts. Independent business owners have to do to all the work ALONE while maintaining full “autonomy.”

  1. thank you for your informative article. i believe that if you never managed a coffee shop, better to go the franchise option. there is much less risk, as you are using an established brand plus the training. you also have the option of selling after you learn the business and you can open your very own shop

    1. Exactly Dave, why go through all the hassle of creating your coffee shop business from scratch when you can use someone else’s proven brand and product!

  2. By all means venturing into the coffee industry is lucrative and evergreen, especially in the US and Canada. The numbers clearly do not lie.

However, it is always a good idea to research before stepping into the arena because the look of things from the outside might be different from the inside. That is why I firmly believe your recommendation to start out by franchising an already established brand is the safest bet.

A lot can be learnt by utilizing this model, not to mention the potential pitfalls you get to avoid by simply taking advantage of the experiences of others.

    Great post.

    1. Thanks Iyke,

Leveraging the strength and experience of an established business to start your own is the best way to go in my opinion.

      Jordan.

  3. Being a coffee lover, I admit that the idea of having my own coffee shop crossed my mind more than once in the past. However, I have never thought of the possibility to have it as a franchise! Yet it is logical and reasonable.
Both of the franchise opportunities you described in this article look good. Which one do you personally incline to more?

    1. Hi Lenka,

I incline towards the coffee shop franchise opportunity as I will be able to leverage the franchiser’s brand recognition, ongoing support and training, product range and testing already done for me and the fact that the franchiser already has a track record of his success across the USA or Canada.

      Thank you.

      Jordan.

  4. Hiya CoffeePotInc

Thank you for your in depth article about coffee shop franchise opportunities in the US and Canada. I didn’t know coffee shops were so popular or so lucrative! Are there tea options available? Sorry I’m for tea, although I am partial to a McDonald’s Toffee Latte.

Do you have to be either or to sell coffee? I have bookmarked your site for future reference as there is so much for me to learn about franchises and coffee shops . I look forward to part 2, krs PurpleLioness

    1. Hello,

Actually most of the coffee shop franchises that I posted about in this article and in future articles do also sell tea, coffee and tea are usually paired together.

If I was to choose between a coffee only, tea only, or a coffee and tea shop I would go for the later.

Stay tuned for the coming posts!

      Regards,
      Jordan.

  5. Coffee shops are tend to be one of the most profitable business around as the cost of producing a coffee is almost nothing compared to what they usually charge for it. Obviously with so big profit margins competition is going crazy but if you can create a good business plan I don’t see the reason not to succeed.

    1. Agree Stratos, that’s what makes it a lucrative business opportunity and the reason why many investors and business owner are looking at the idea of a coffee shop business.

  6. Hello. Thanks a lot for giving us such an amazing tips about this big industry.

I am from Europe and I want to say that just like me, the people here love coffee. Every morning on the way to work people stand in huge lines to buy their coffee, on the subway area, or other shops. Even if you have described the opportunities in Canada, I think that all this useful information can be used in other areas. These franchise opportunities are the best in my opinion. Do you think I could benefit with opportunity in Europe too? If not, and i’m thinking to open my own coffee shop.

Thanks again for this. If you don’t mind, i will share your article on my social media account. Wish you all the best !

    1. Hello Nimrod,

Thank you for your insight and opinion, actually there are franchises operating and active in Europe. I will actually dedicate a post on Europe Coffee shop franchise opportunities so stay tuned for the coming post!

Again, thank your for your trust and for sharing the article!

      Jordan.

  7. I also lean more towards the option of buying a franchise than starting from scratch. Especially if you have little to no business experience there is a lot more support available to you when you take the franchise path.
Once you know what you are doing its always possible to sell the franchise and start your own business. Anyway, It was a great article. Very well said!
